Douglasville, GA – South Cobb High School cheerleading Coach Jacqueline Valentine is ready to show the community that her squad is ready for the season. She recently took to the time to answer some questions about herself and her squad…
Q: How many years have you been the coach at your high school? How many overall?
A: “I have been a cheerleading coach at South Cobb High School for eight years, Head Coach for two and coached for a total of eleven years.”
Q: In your years of coaching, what is the best "coaching" moment of your career?
A: “The best coaching moments of my career are when someone from outside of our school gives a positive comment about our squad and their willingness to serve.”
Q: When and why did you decide to become a coach?
A: “I decided to become a coach in 1996 when the principal of Cherokee High School asked me to coach the JV squad.”
Q: What coach do you consider your mentor; who did you learn from, and who do you admire as a coach?
A: “I consider Coach Cliff Collins and Coach Bill Waller to be my mentors because they showed me what good coaching is all about. I learned from Coach Deborah at Cherokee High School and Coach Brenda Watkins at South Cobb.”
Q: Did you play the sport you coach; if so, what is your favorite memory from your time as a player?
A: “Yes, I cheered in high school and partner stunted with my fraternity brother in college. My favorite memory as a cheerleader is Red Hot our workout cheer and working as a base and flyer. We filled whatever position was needed.”
Q: What expectations do you have for your squad during the 2011-2012 year?
A: “My expectations are that my squad would conduct themselves in a ladylike manner at all times, be a good example of a scholar athlete, maintain excellent grades and that they would execute each and every cheer or dance routine with cleanliness and precision.”
Q: What do you think will be the key factors that will make your squad do well in competitions?
A: “Following and adhering to my expectations.”
Q: Are there any cheerleaders that have pleasantly surprised you by stepping up beyond your expectations for this year?
A: “Yes, I would have to say Blake Bolton, Maraijha Davis, Alexis Grier and Kortney Clonts have stepped up. They are my senior veterans and they are taking on a shared leadership role for the squad. They each have their own particular strengths that add to the overall strength of the team.”
Q: Which events are you most looking forward to?
A: “I am most looking forward to playing McEachern and Harrison, our big rivals, because everyone gets pumped up for those events.”
Q: If we were to ask your players what quote you most frequently use for motivation, what would it be?
A: "Excellence Not Excuses, Do it Again, and Clean, Clear and Precise are the motivation quotes that we use quite often.”
